So you may have noticed that this blog stopped almost as quickly as it started. And while the real reason was a HUGE pile of spam that quickly became unmanageable (but I think I’ve fixed that), there were other reasons as well. One of these was the fact that I was a bit uninspired by my own blog. That’s a bad thing! Honestly I was writing some game design articles because it seemed like it was what I should be doing. I wanted to have a voice and have an place to interact with all of you, but it just wasn’t working for me. There are a bunch of other designers writing design articles, and likely far better than mine, so I’ll leave that to them. (although I’ll probably hit on it from time to time if I feel inspired)
However, that does not mean I don’t have something to say about this game industry that I am so entrenched in. To be honest, I didn’t feel terribly free to write what came to mind because I’m the owner of a company (Wyrd), and as such I felt I had to be responsible and either only post some kind of marketing talk, or vanilla type design articles. But that’s not me. Those who know me know I have strong opinions, and in my opinion I have quite a lot of things to say which (I think) are a ton more interesting than a series of how-to articles on game design.
So what has changed?
Well, as a company, we’ve decided that I can and should be a bit more “real” and worry a bit less about protecting the feelings of everyone out there who buy our products now or in the future. I’m not saying I intend to be purposefully hurtful, as that is not who I am, but I am going to be blunt, and I am going to be honest, and that will hurt some peoples feelings from time to time. It likely means also that those of you who already have a negative opinion of me, will likely find ALL the proof you need that I’m some bad person, and use this as the reasons to not support wyrd or buy wyrd products. And I can’t stop you. If that’s what you choose to take from my posts, then I feel a sorry for you, because you’re acting close minded and you are proving that you’re unwilling to take a step back from your assumptions to see who I really am, and listen to what I’m really saying, and understand what I stand for. What has changed is that I’m not going to change who I am because of close minded people. In this business that is a hard thing to do, but it’s what is going to happen here.
So what is coming?
All of you will get to see a bit more into how I work, a lot more into how the game industry works, and a ton more into what goes on behind the scenes at Wyrd and with gaming in general. Sometimes I will be angry and rant here. I am going to actually show my anger. But at the same time I hope to share the good things and funny things as well. I hope that turns this into a FAR more interesting place, and one that inspires ME to keep coming back, and hopefully some of you as well (even if I do hurt your feelings from time to time).
P.S. One thing to always keep in mind: When I mention “gamers” as a category, I never mean ALL gamers, and usually don’t even mean a majority, and I may or may not be talking about you (I honestly don’t know). All I mean to say is that some people who are gamers are the subject of what I’m talking about. It’s that way about any group I may discuss. If you think I am talking about you and are offended by that, it’s best to take a moment to reflect and figure out why you’re making that assumption. 😉
